Electricity Meter Reading Guide — How to Read Your Meter 2026

Your electricity meter is the small device installed at your premises that measures how much electricity you consume. The DISCO's meter reader visits monthly, notes the reading, and the difference from last month's reading becomes the "units consumed" on your bill. But meter readers make mistakes — they may estimate readings, misread dials, or sometimes skip visits entirely. By knowing how to read your own meter, you can verify the readings on your bill, calculate your consumption in real time, and catch billing errors before paying. This guide covers analog meters (still common in older neighborhoods), digital meters (standard for new connections), and smart meters (being rolled out in major cities).

Quick Summary: Read your meter on the date mentioned as "Reading Date" in your bill. Take a photo. Compare with the reading on the next bill. If they differ by more than 5 units, file a complaint with the photo as evidence.

Types of Electricity Meters in Pakistan

Pakistani DISCOs install three types of meters depending on connection age and location:

Meter Type Display Common In Accuracy
Analog (Dial)4–5 rotating dialsOlder homes (pre-2010)±5%
Digital (LCD)Digital LCD numberStandard since 2010±1%
Smart (AMI)LCD + wireless reportingNew connections (post-2022)±0.5%
Three-Phase DigitalLCD, multiple readingsCommercial/Industrial±1%

How to Read an Analog (Dial) Meter

Analog meters have 4–5 dials (circles with numbers 0–9 and a pointer). Reading them correctly requires attention:

  1. Stand directly in front of the meter at eye level with the dials.
  2. Read the dials from LEFT to RIGHT.
  3. If the pointer is between two numbers, write down the LOWER number. Example: pointer between 4 and 5 → write 4.
  4. If the pointer is directly ON a number, look at the dial to its RIGHT. If that dial has passed 0, write the number the pointer is on. If it hasn't reached 0, write the previous number.
  5. Ignore the rightmost dial if it's red or marked "1/10" — that's the decimal dial.
  6. Note all 4 digits in order. Example: 1, 2, 4, 5 → reading is 1245 kWh.

Tip: Take a photo of the dials so you can compare with last month's reading.

How to Read a Digital (LCD) Meter

Digital meters are much easier — they show a number directly on an LCD screen:

  1. Look at the LCD display on the front of the meter. It typically shows a 5–6 digit number.
  2. Wait for the display to cycle if it shows multiple screens. Some meters cycle between kWh, voltage, current, and time. Wait for the screen showing kWh or the energy symbol (⚡).
  3. Note all digits before the decimal point. Ignore digits after the decimal — they're sub-units.
  4. Example: If display shows 01245.3, the reading is 1245 kWh.
  5. For three-phase meters, there may be separate readings for each phase (R, Y, B) plus a total. Use the TOTAL reading.

How to Calculate Your Consumption

Once you have your current meter reading, calculating consumption is simple subtraction:

// Consumption Calculation

Current Reading: 1245 kWh

Previous Reading: 1180 kWh

────────────────────────────

Consumption: 65 kWh (units)

At Rs. 30/unit average: 65 × 30 = Rs. 1,950

+ FPA, taxes, surcharges: ~Rs. 800

Estimated Bill: Rs. 2,750

Compare your estimated bill with the actual bill. If actual is significantly higher (>20%), the meter reader may have made an error.

How to Verify DISCO Meter Readings

DISCO meter readers visit between the 8th and 18th of each month. To verify their reading:

  1. Find the "Reading Date" on your bill — usually between the 8th and 18th of the billing month.
  2. Take a photo of your meter on that exact date at roughly the same time the meter reader typically visits (morning).
  3. Wait for the bill to arrive — usually 5–10 days after reading date.
  4. Compare the meter reading on the bill with the photo you took. They should match within ±5 units.
  5. If they differ by more than 5 units, file a complaint at your DISCO SDO office with the photo as evidence. They must investigate within 7 working days.

What to Do if Your Meter is Faulty

Faulty meters can either over-read (you pay too much) or under-read (you eventually get a huge "average bill" once discovered). Symptoms of a faulty meter:

If you suspect a fault, file a "Meter Testing" complaint at your DISCO office. The DISCO will send a team within 7 days to test the meter. If faulty, the meter is replaced free of charge and your previous 3 months' bills are recalculated based on average usage.

Tips for Accurate Meter Reading

Frequently Asked Questions

How to read an analog electricity meter?
Read the dials from left to right. If the pointer is between two numbers, write down the lower number. If the pointer is directly on a number, look at the next dial — if it's past zero, write the higher number; if before zero, write the lower number. The final reading is in kWh (units).
How to read a digital electricity meter?
For digital meters, simply read the number displayed on the LCD screen. The display usually shows the cumulative kWh reading. Some meters cycle through multiple screens — wait for the screen showing 'kWh' or the energy symbol. Note all digits before the decimal point.
How to calculate electricity consumption from meter readings?
Subtract the previous month's reading from the current month's reading. The difference is your consumption in kWh (units). Example: Current reading 1245 - Previous reading 1180 = 65 kWh consumed this month.
How to verify my DISCO meter reading is correct?
Take a photo of your meter on the 'Reading Date' mentioned in your bill. Compare the reading on the meter to the reading on your bill. If they differ by more than 5 units, file a complaint at your DISCO office with the photo evidence.
What if my meter is faulty?
If your meter shows erratic readings (e.g., 500 units when you used 100), report it to your DISCO immediately. The DISCO will send a team to inspect. If faulty, the meter is replaced free of charge. During the dispute period, you pay based on the average of the last 3 months.
When does the meter reader visit my home?
DISCO meter readers typically visit between the 8th and 18th of each month. The exact date for your connection is printed on your bill as 'Reading Date'. If you're not home, the reader estimates the reading based on past usage — which can lead to incorrect bills. Be home on reading date or take your own photo as evidence.
